Throwing a big first birthday bash has become a huge tradition within the past couple years, hasn’t it? People joke that a one year old doesn’t even realize it’s his or her birthday, but the truth is, first birthday parties are just as much for parents, friends, and family as they are for the little one year old.
We’ve been ramping up our selection of first birthday party themes lately, and we recently added the adorable Wild at One Zebra party supplies (pictured above), as well as the Wild at One Giraffe party supplies (shown below) to PartyPail.

Wild at 1 Decorations
For Wild at 1 Zebra, the color palette you’re working with is aqua blue, lime green, black, and cream, while Wild at 1 Giraffe uses bright pink, lime green, and cream. Both of the themes incorporate wild giraffe and zebra prints. Although the colors schemes are a bit different, you can still decorate your Wild at 1 birthday party very similarly no matter which theme you’re using. Here are some ideas:
- Transform the party space into a jungle by covering one wall with leafy green gossamer. Drape brown streamers across the ceiling to look like jungle branches and ropes.
- Cover the table with giraffe print and zebra print fabric. For centerpieces, make tropical floral arrangements out of birds of paradise, lilies, orchids, and bamboo.
- Another centerpiece and room decor idea is to set potted leafy houseplants in the centers of tables and in the corners of the room. You can give the plants to the adult party guests as favors.
- Make the decor kid-friendly by using plush jungle animals throughout the decor.
- Turn the food table into the focal point of the room by dressing it up with a grass skirt. Buy several yards of netting to hang on the ceiling above the table and drape behind the table and around the left and right sides of the table to look like mosquito netting.
Wild at 1 Food
For food, focus fun, tropical flavors and jungle and safari-themed eats. Here are some ideas:
- Grill up skewers that have chicken or steak, onions, mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes on them.
- For the kids, make “safari sandwiches” filled with peanut butter and sliced bananas. Use animal-shaped cookie cutters to cut the sandwiches into fun shapes.
- Mix together a tropical fruit salad featuring mango, banana, watermelon, orange, grapes, and strawberries.
- Fill apothecary jars with animal crackers, Goldfish crackers, tiger tails (Cheetos), vines (licorice), and gummy worms.
- For the cake, use fondant icing to make either a giraffe print or a zebra print cake. And don’t forget a smash cake for the honoree! Be sure to have the camera ready for when the birthday boy or girl goes wild with the smash cake.
Honoring the Wild at 1 Birthday Boy or Girl
Although the birthday boy or girl may be too young to fully understand, you can make them feel like the honoree in some special ways! Both the Wild at 1 Zebra and Wild at 1 Giraffe themes have high chair decorating kits available to turn the honoree’s seat into the most important one in the house! Each kit comes with a pennant banner for the tray, a floor mat (which adds to the decor and eases smash cake cleanup!), and a coordinating bib.
